Direct a Play

Submit a play for next season

The Bellingham Theatre Guild Play Selection Committee is seeking submissions from prospective directors for our 2018-2019 season. We welcome everyone to submit projects of interest.

Typically, BTG produces popular musicals and comedies, as well as dramas and other well-known genres. Our audiences have a wide range of interests, and we seek to offer plays that will appeal to an inclusive crowd. Review the plays we have produced since 1929 to get an idea of the types of work BTG produces and which shows we’ve done recently:

Review our 2018-2019 Season Calendar. The OPENER, HOLIDAY, and CLOSER slots (with 8 weeks of rehearsal) can accommodate musicals or larger shows. MEDIUM and OPENER (at 6 weeks of rehearsal) slots are most conducive for standard rehearsal and technical demands. The SMALL show that is part of the BOAT REP is for a no-set show that will rehearse around, and perform with the set-up of, the BOAT Festival. (NB: BOAT Festival has a separate project proposal procedure and is not part of season show proposals.)

When submitting, identify which slot(s) best suits your proposed play.

Deadlines and Selection Process

All submissions are due via the online form by December 1, with accompanying scripts and support materials due by December 3, 2017. The committee will read all proposals and scripts and will then schedule interviews with directors in early Winter. We typically make a decision on our next season by late Winter.

Contact Sean Walbeck (Play Selection Chair) at 360-647-9242 or sean@gigglewax.com for more information.

If you have supporting materials, such as set or costume sketches/examples, etc., those may be delivered on or by December 3, 2017; see below for instructions. Links to reviews and wiki pages may be included in the online form.

Submitting Scripts

The Play Selection Committee needs to read the official Acting Edition of the production you are proposing. No photocopies, digital copies, or different versions of the same play will be accepted.

There are two methods for submitting scripts:

1. You (or an associate) will deliver two (2) Acting Editions of your proposed play, either through the mail or in person to Sean Walbeck at the Bellingham Theatre Guild between 7:00 and 9:00 pm on December 3, 2017, during the auditions for “My Three Angels.” At the end of the review process, your scripts will be returned to you.

2. If the play you are proposing is available only through perusal at the Publisher’s website, you will confirm with Sean Walbeck which precise edition of this play you are proposing, so the Play Selection Committee can procure the correct script.

If you have any questions about script submission, contact Sean Walbeck (Play Selection Chair) at 360-647-9242 or sean@gigglewax.com for more information.

Submitting supporting materials

The Play Selection Committee LOVES getting extra information about submitted plays, whether it’s recordings of the music, reviews, design concepts, lists of awards or honors, and whatever you think is appropriate and necessary. The best way to get those materials to us is either by mail or by delivering them to Sean Walbeck at BTG on December 3, 2017.

Thank you for your interest in directing a play at BTG.
